[CAESAREAN] the birth of our Ruby Isabelle 20/5/12

I went into hospital for a induction Saturday night they were meant to do the gel to ripen the cervix, after checking me they said they couldn't do it because she was too high, still -3 above the pelvis. They traced the baby and won't happy with her movements but were happy to just watch it overnight. Sunday morning they brought the head dr in to break the waters while they had theatre on stand by incase of cord prolapse. That went well but after 9 hours of induced labour bub was still -2 above the pelvis. Her heart rate kept dropping and was on a just acceptable level all day, now it was too high and she was getting distressed. The doctor said it was my call they could leave her a little while longer but he recommended a c-cection, he couldn't see her coming out on her own. I had my mid-wife and student mid-wife plus 2 hospital mid-wifes we talked about it and all agreed, opted to get her out it had been too long and if she was coming out she would be coming down by now. They prepared me for theatre. I had a epi in so they were just going to top that up for the op. During the op i started feeling pain, they were putting more anaesthetic in and said they needed to do a general. I said No they were not to do it, I had to know my baby was okay. They gave me gas and tried to keep me calm and kept saying they needed to do the general. I heard DD3 cry, it was the best sound in the world. They brought DD3 over then got DH to leave with her. Next thing I knew I was waking up in recovery, so they had done the general. It was 10.30 by the time I got back to the ward, only mum was waiting there. She said DH was down in NICU with DD3, her sugar levels were 0.5 so she had to be rushed down there and she was ok but had to stay there. DH came up with a photo of DD3 and I cried and cried. This isn't what was meant to happen, I should have had my baby with me, breastfeeding, able to get up, instead I lay there without my baby and helpless to do anything about it. At 2am they wheeled my bed down for me to meet DD3. I got to hold her but not feed her. I felt a bit better after seeing her. She weighed a big 4.775kg or 10.5lb and measured a huge 62cm. They took me down in the morning. Lunch time I got up very painfully from then on I walked down to see DD. I finally got to feed her and she took to it straight away, from then i walked down to do 3 hourly feeds. She had a huge bump on her head from hitting my pelvis bone when i was contracting instead of going into the pelvis. She was in NICU until Wednesday. Then Thursday we went home. I finally had all 4 kids with me and things are how they should be. Today I was looking through the photos on the computer and DH had gotten 2 film clips of DD3 being checked and measured, *I cried because I got to see it and I thought I totally missed it.*it has been hard having a c-section from 3 VBs but my beautiful girl is here safe and I am greatful to the doctors who assisted.

I'm sorry things didn't go quite to plan but very glad your DH got a lot of important stuff on video for you to see. It must have been heartbreaking being separated from your gorgeous new girl.

I hope you and Ruby have now settled in really well at home and you're enjoying time as a beautiful family of 6.

    Yowie,
Just read your birth story now - sorry you had such a traumatic time with her birth, especially after VB's with your other babies.
I remember my first two being taken off me and waiting in recovery on my own, feeling awful.
So glad that you're home now and hope that you're recovering well and enjoying your new little girl.
